History
1919 - 1945
Premises constructed as a 'commercial facility' to serve the burgeoning maritime residential suburb
of Millers Point. Already well established during the nineteenth century
Millers Point, the dormitory contemporary of The Rocks, was largely a
project development financed by the profitable shipping companies labour to
service the ever growing trade activity of the new nation - some 60% of
which was transacted through the Port Jackson (Sydney) wharf facilities.
1950 - 1975
The 'local'
premises continued to service the community as a typical take-away
established of the era - speciality 'Aussie Hamburgers'.
1967 - 1987
Seafood came to 29 Kent Street and Fish 'n' Chips were added to the menu. The temptation was too
much....business people from 'Sydney' soon joined the locals to enjoy the
'best, freshest seafood in town!' Seating was added to provide eat-in as
well as take-away.
1988 - 1996
During this period the nautical theme was accentuated and the dining facility was expanded to
include the upstairs function rooms. While maintaining the traditional deep
fry facilities for succulent Whiting or Flathead in beer batter, the
specialisation moved to healthy Aussie BBQ and grill methods of preparation
for the extensive range of deep sea, estuary, river and tropical seafood
which abounds in Australian waters.
1997
Saw a complete
refurbishment of premises from floor to roof; relocation and re-equipping
of kitchen; installation of health and safety items to enable licensing of
the premises by the Liquor Administration Board; and a complete interior
design refit under the supervision of Heritage Architects and Designers to
ensure a faithful reproduction and representation of the construction
styles and colours of the early twentieth century. Fish at the Rocks
reopened in its new format in August 1997.
1998......
The formula and mission of fish at the Rocks remains constant - to offer the finest, freshest
Australian seafood prepared carefully and consistently while providing
value for money dining in a quaint atmosphere with pleasant and efficient
service.
